Regulatory Oversight in China

Further to the comprehensive safety checks conducted for the nuclear installations in China following the Fukushima nuclear accident, the State Council has officially lifted the 19-month suspension on nuclear project approvals.

In October 2012, the Chinese government approved the national plan for nuclear power safety (2011-2020), nuclear power development (2011-2020) and the national development programme 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015). A small number of nuclear projects will be launched by 2015 and all of them will be properly vetted and located at coastal sites, while no inland projects will be approved before 2015. All new nuclear projects reactors must adopt the third-generation technology, and comply with the highest international safety standards.
