For more than one hundred years, CLP has grown hand-in-hand with Hong Kong, first supplying electricity to Kowloon’s streets in 1903. Today, we service around 2.52 million customer accounts in Kowloon, the New Territories and most of the outlying islands whilst providing the most reliable electricity in Hong Kong at a reasonable cost. We have made it our mission to actively participate in Hong Kong’s community affairs with a long-term focus on education, environment and social development.
We operate a vertically-integrated electricity supply business in Hong Kong – which includes generation, transmission and distribution, and retail – and serve 80 percent of the territory's population. Through our partnership with China Southern Power Grid in Castle Peak Power Company Limited (CAPCO), we operate the Castle Peak Power Station, Black Point Power Station and Penny’s Bay Power Station. The installed capacity of these three stations totals 6,933MW (as at 31 December 2016). We also import power from Guangdong Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station. In addition, we manage around 15,280 kilometres of cable and over 14,400 substations.
CLP is regulated by the Scheme of Control Agreement, which monitors our performance and stipulates our levels of investment and return. The scheme has served Hong Kong well and is a key factor behind the world-class level of reliability, reasonable cost and environmental performance of our electricity supply. We also share the community’s concerns about air quality, and as such we were early adopters of low carbon technologies. CLP has reduced emissions by more than 85 per cent from the early 1990s, despite a corresponding rise in electricity demand in the same period.
