CLP entered the Indian market when we completed the acquisition of a majority stake in Gujarat Paguthan Energy Corporation Private Limited (GPEC) in 2002. We assumed full ownership of the business in 2003. Today, CLP is one of the largest foreign private power players and the biggest investor in the wind power sector in India.
Operating through the wholly-owned CLP India Private Ltd., our investments have grown into a diversified and climate-friendly generation portfolio, amounting to 3,026MW (as at June 2013). Our investments cover renewable energy, supercritical coal-fired, and gas-fired generation.
Our flagship power plant in India is a 655MW gas-fired power plant in Baruch, Gujarat, which has been operating since 1998. The plant is one of the largest independent power projects to have been set up in India following the government's 1992 policy of facilitating private investment in power generation. We also own a 1,320 MW supercritical coal-fired power project at Jhajjar in the northern state of Haryana. Both units achieved commercial operation in 2012.
In addition to over 1,000MW of wind power projects, we are also considering other opportunities including hydro, solar, and transmission projects.
CLP India will continue to power India in accordance to the highest global standards in operational and safety standards. We are committed to bringing light to millions in India in an affordable and sustainable manner.
Powering the market responsibly
As the largest investor in wind power in India, we have already shown the way forward. In line with the Group Climate Vision 2050, CLP India remains committed to meeting specific carbon intensity reduction targets. We will do so by expanding our renewable energy portfolio and continue to invest in improving energy efficiency in our operations.
