Commissioned in 1994, Daya Bay is the Mainland's first commercial nuclear power station and also the largest signature joint venture project during the initial stage of the reform and opening up of the Chinese Mainland. The station comprises 2 x 1,026MW pressurised water reactor (PWR) generating units and produces around 15 billion kWh of electricity per year.
To ensure that more non-carbon and cost-competitive energy is provided to Hong Kong, Daya Bay increases its electricity supply to Hong Kong from 70% to around 80% of its output starting from late 2014. Since its operation in 1994, Daya Bay has been supplying safe and reliable non-carbon energy to Hong Kong, meeting around a quarter of the city’s electricity needs.
