Yallourn Coal-fired Power Station and Brown Coal Open-cut Mine

Yallourn Coal-fired Power Station and Brown Coal Open-cut Mine

Yallourn Coal-fired Power Station supplies approximately 20% of Victoria's electricity needs and approximately 8% of the National Electricity Market (NEM). It commenced operations in 1974 with four generating units commissioned between 1974 and 1982.

The Yallourn brown coal mine is one of the largest open-cut mines in Australia and provides a secure, continuous source of fuel for generation to the Yallourn power station.

EnergyAustralia has announced plans to close the Yallourn power station in mid-2028, four years earlier than the end of its technical life. In collaboration with the State Government of Victoria, EnergyAustralia will ensure an orderly transition.
