It is one of CLP’s priorities to create positive sustainability impact through our energy business. Over the years, our environmental, social and governance (ESG) progress has been well recognised in Hong Kong and across the Asia-Pacific region, and we have received numerous awards for our sustainability achievements.

ESG Ratings

Our latest ESG ratings as of 31 July 2025 are listed below.

CDP 2024:

Climate Change score: B
Water score: B

CDP runs a global disclosure system for companies, cities, states and regions to measure and manage their environmental impacts. CLP has provided data for CDP – Climate Change scoring since its launch in 2002, and currently discloses on the CDP Climate Change and Water Security disclosure initiatives.

S&P Global ESG Score 2025: 61/100

The Dow Jones Best-in-Class Indices (DJBIC) are globally recognised indices which include companies from a wide spectrum of industries. Inclusion in DJBIC is based on a company’s ESG score in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment. CLP has been a constituent of the Dow Jones Best-in-Class Asia Pacific Index (formerly known as Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index before February 2025) since its launch in 2009.  

FTSE4Good 2025: 3.8/5

The FTSE4Good Index Series is designed to measure the performance of companies demonstrating strong ESG practices. CLP has been included in the FTSE4Good Index since June 2018.

Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index 2024-2025: AA+

The Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index provides the market with a clearer understanding of CLP's sustainability performance relative to other companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong, including those based in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland. CLP has been listed on the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index and Hang Seng (Mainland and HK) Corporate Sustainability Index since their inception in 2010. Also, a Hang Seng ESG 50 Index was launched in 2020 to reflect the performance of top 50 ESG leaders with relatively high market-capitalisation listed in Hong Kong, with CLP as one of the constituents.

MSCI ESG Ratings 2024: AA

The MSCI ESG Ratings measure a company’s resilience to long-term, industry material environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks based on the company’s ESG risk exposure and risk management relative to peers. CLP is a constituent of the MSCI ACWI Index and MSCI ACWI ESG Universal Index.  

Sustainalytics Company ESG Risk Ratings: 22.5, Medium Risk (on a scale of severity 0-40+) (as of the last full update on 24 January 2025)

Launched in 2020, Sustainalytics’ ESG Risk Ratings aim to help companies and investors identify ESG issues that pose potential financial risks. They measure the degree to which ESG issues are putting a company’s entire value at risk. The lower a company’s rating, the lower their overall risk of experiencing material financial impact due to ESG factors.

While the industry's risk exposure being indicated as high, CLP’s management of ESG risk was considered as strong. Therefore, CLP’s overall risk rating was assessed as "medium".

Moody's Net Zero Assessment 2024: NZ-2 (advanced)

Moody's Net Zero Assessments (NZA) indicate Moody's opinion of the strength of an entity’s carbon transition plan relative to a global net zero pathway consistent with the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.

CLP's first corporate assessment results were first released in 2024 and was rated as NZ-2 (advanced) which is the second-best score on a five-point scale.

CLP’s 2024 Annual Report and Sustainability Report received two Gold Awards in the 2025 ARA General Award and Sustainability Reporting Award categories, along with the 2025 Sustainability Report of the Year and the Special Award for Online Reporting in the private sector. It is the seventh consecutive year for CLP to receive Gold Awards in both categories.

Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants  Best Corporate Governance and ESG Awards 2025

Platinum Award in the Most Sustainable Organizations Awards - Elite Past Winners section

The Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ Best Corporate Governance and ESG Awards evaluates the sustainability of Hong Kong-listed companies and public sector organisations based on their corporate governance policies, as well as ESG practices and disclosures. In the Most Sustainable Organizations Awards, CLP won the Platinum Award for the fifth consecutive year.

Citation for Online ESG Reporting

The Hong Kong Management Association’s Best Annual Reports Awards encourage the publication of timely, accurate, informative and well-presented annual reports for stakeholders. In 2024, CLP won the Best Report Award and Citation for Online ESG Reporting. CLP also won the Best Environmental, Social and Governance Reporting Award (Public Utility), formerly known as the Sustainability Reporting Award. The company has been named a winner every year since the award was introduced in 2012.

The Hong Kong Management Association’s Hong Kong Sustainability Award recognises organisations that have demonstrated due consideration to the economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainability, while achieving good business and organisational performance. CLP was conferred with the Grand Award, the top accolade at the Award in 2025. Since the award was established in 2016, CLP has won the Hong Kong Sustainability Award (Distinction Award) in the Large Organisations category every time the award was presented.

IR Impact Awards – Greater China 2025

Best Sustainability Reporting (Large Cap)

The IR Impact Awards (formerly IR Magazine Awards) recognise the achievement of companies that produce clear investor-facing communications about ESG issues that are material to their business. In 2025, CLP won the Best Sustainability Reporting award in the large cap category.
