It is one of CLP’s priorities to create positive sustainability impact through our energy business. Over the years, our environmental, social and governance (ESG) progress has been well recognised in Hong Kong and across the Asia-Pacific region, and we have received numerous awards for our sustainability achievements.

ESG Ratings

Our latest ESG ratings as of 15 February 2024 are listed below.

CDP 2023:

Climate Change score: A- 
Water score: B

CDP runs a global disclosure system for companies, cities, states and regions to measure and manage their environmental impacts. CLP has provided data for CDP – Climate Change scoring since its launch in 2002, and currently discloses on the CDP Climate Change and Water Security disclosure initiatives.

Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index  2023

Company score: 67/100

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) is a globally recognised index which includes companies from a wide spectrum of industries. Inclusion in DJSI is based on a company’s score in the Corporate Sustainability Assessment. CLP has been a constituent of the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index (DJSI Asia Pacific) since the launch of the index in 2009.  

FTSE4Good 2023: 4.2/5

The FTSE4Good Index Series is designed to measure the performance of companies demonstrating strong Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices. CLP has been included in the FTSE4Good Index since June 2018.

Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index 2023-2024: AA+

The Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index helps the market better understand CLP's sustainability performance relative to other Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. CLP has been listed on the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index and Hang Seng (Mainland and HK) Corporate Sustainability Index since their inception in 2010. Also, a Hang Seng ESG 50 Index was launched in 2020 to reflect the performance of top 50 ESG leaders with relatively high market-capitalisation listed in Hong Kong, with CLP as one of the constituents.

MSCI ESG Ratings 2023: AA

The MSCI ESG Ratings measure a company’s resilience to long-term, industry material environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks based on the company’s ESG risk exposure and risk management relative to peers. CLP is a constituent of the MSCI ACWI Index and MSCI ACWI ESG Universal Index.  

Sustainalytics Company ESG Risk Ratings: 20.2, Medium Risk (on a scale of severity 0-40+)
(as of 22 December 2023)

Launched in 2020, Sustainalytics’ ESG Risk Ratings aim to help companies and investors identify ESG issues that pose potential financial risks. They measure the degree to which ESG issues are putting a company’s entire value at risk. The lower a company’s rating, the lower their overall risk of experiencing material financial impact due to ESG factors.

While CLP’s management of ESG material risks was considered as strong, due to the industry’s risk exposure being indicated as high, CLP’s overall risk rating was assessed as "medium". This rating aligns with the majority of global electric utilities which are identified as having medium to higher risk ratings.

Australasian Reporting Awards 2023

General Award – Gold Award
Sustainability Reporting Award – Gold Award
Special Award for Online Reporting – Private Sector

CLP’s 2022 Annual Report and Sustainability Report received two Gold Awards in the 2023 ARA General Award and Sustainability Reporting Award categories, along with the Special Award for Online Reporting in the private sector. It is the fifth consecutive year for CLP to receive Gold Awards in both categories.

BDO ESG Awards 2023

Best in ESG
Theme Award

The BDO ESG Awards recognises outstanding Hong Kong-listed companies that have made positive environmental, social and governance (ESG) impacts. In 2023, CLP won the Best in ESG Award in the Large Market Capitalisation category for the fourth consecutive time and was also honoured with the Theme Award for the second consecutive time. The Theme Award commends the top company demonstrating efforts in achieving carbon neutrality.

Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants  Best Corporate Governance and ESG Awards 2023

Platinum Award in the Most Sustainable Companies/ Organizations Awards - Hang Seng Index category

The Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ Best Corporate Governance and ESG Awards evaluates the sustainability of Hong Kong-listed companies and public sector organisations based on their corporate governance policies, as well as ESG practices and disclosures. In the Most Sustainable Companies/ Organizations Awards, CLP won the Platinum Award in the Hang Seng Index category for the third consecutive year.

Best Environmental, Social and Governance Reporting Award (Public Utility)

The Hong Kong Management Association’s Best Annual Reports Awards encourage the publication of timely, accurate, informative and well-presented annual reports for stakeholders. In 2023, CLP won the Best Report Award and the Best Annual Reports Awards 50th Anniversary Judge's Special Award. CLP also won the Best Environmental, Social and Governance Reporting Award (Public Utility), formerly known as the Sustainability Reporting Award. The company has been named a winner since the award was introduced in 2012.

Excellence in Environmental Sustainability Initiative

The Hong Kong Management Association’s Hong Kong Sustainability Award recognises organisations that have demonstrated due consideration to the economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainability, while achieving good business and organisational performance. CLP was a fifth-time winner of the Hong Kong Sustainability Award in the large-sized organisations category. In 2023, CLP also won the Excellence in Environmental Sustainability Initiative award.

The IR Magazine Awards recognise the achievement of companies that produce clear investor-facing communications about ESG issues that are material to their business. In 2023, CLP won the awards for Best Annual Report and Best ESG Reporting (Large Cap).

Social Capital Builder Awards 2022

Social Capital and Sustainability Grand Award

In collaboration with the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency, the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Community Investment and Inclusion Fund (CIIF) Committee evaluates Hong Kong-listed companies on a range of social capital attributes including brand trust and stakeholder relationships, which are regarded as key resources for promoting sustainable social development. At the CIIF’s Social Capital Builder Awards, CLP won the Social Capital and Sustainability Grand Award.
